St Joseph Montessori School

By helping complete housing for Montessori teachers, Vern Lal Global Foundation is nurturing a transformative path to education and opportunity.
Impact of Our Work
St Joseph Montessori School sits in Ndirma Litembo, a rural village ten miles from Songea in southern Tanzania. The community faces persistent challenges: limited educational resources, strained economic prospects, and a shift away from once-promising coffee cultivation due to unprofitably low market prices. Most families rely on small-scale farming, growing corn, beans, and vegetables to make ends meet, all while educational opportunities remain painfully scarce.
Until recently, Ndirma Litembo offered only an elementary school, with no options for early childhood learning. Recognizing this need, dedicated local leaders and supporters established St Joseph Montessori School, launching a kindergarten program that nurtures a love of learning from the start. Their vision is clear: to open up greater educational access in the village and, over time, spark improved economic opportunities for all.
Vern Lal Global Foundation played a vital role in bringing this vision to life by helping fund the completion of housing for Montessori teachers. Our support focused on finishing work, such as installing doors, windows, ceiling rafters, and drop ceilings. This collaboration ensures educators have a safe and comfortable place to live, laying the foundation for lasting educational change in a community that has long been left behind.
