Learning After Nepal’s Floods

With our partner REED Nepal, we brought learning materials and provided essential support to children affected by floods.

Impact of Our Work

When floods disrupted homes, schools, and daily life in Nepal’s Rasuwa and Nuwakot districts, VLGF provided an emergency grant to REED Nepal to help affected children continue learning and receive essential support.

Through this collaboration, REED distributed 1,000 learning kits containing notebooks, pencils, pens, and other classroom essentials. The project also provided 800 hygiene kits and 100 dignity kits for adolescent girls, including menstrual health supplies and information. Together, these resources addressed immediate needs that can make it harder for children to participate comfortably and confidently in learning.

Recognizing that recovery involves more than replacing lost belongings, the project also supported four group counselling sessions attended by 174 children. Guided by a trained counsellor, the sessions offered opportunities to express feelings, share experiences, and learn ways to cope with stress.

REED worked with local authorities and schools to reach children where they were studying or staying, adapting distribution plans as families moved following the floods. By combining learning materials, personal care supplies, and emotional support, this emergency response helped children take meaningful steps toward learning, connection, and a renewed sense of stability.
